How can we help the homeless? The most common thing that comes to mind when someone mentions living in the United States is the “American Dream.” This dream includes a family living in a house surrounded by a white picket fence. The grass is nice and green and everything seems simple and elegant; however, this is rarely observed. In cities, there are often people on street corners holding signs saying "I will work for food", or something like that. The people carrying these signs are part of the growing homeless population. Shelters that help the homeless are full and under-resourced. This may seem simple at first glance, but it's actually quite complex. Communities continually struggle to cope with the many homeless citizens and attempt to understand the cause so that solutions can be implemented. Solutions to homelessness are provided, publicly and privately, by addressing issues of housing, low income and education. Instead of helping, some parts of the United States are trying to make homelessness illegal. Merchants, salespeople, and business owners view homeless people as a threat and believe they “intimidate customers by aggressively panhandling.” In addition to intimidation, homeless people also have the potential to cause damage to businesses, of course unintentionally. It’s not just the homeless who are blamed, but also the shelters that help them; There have been complaints that with the increasing number of shelters, the number of homeless people is also increasing (A Dream). Contrary to these beliefs, homeless shelters actually help, as they are designed to do.
