Essay / Conspiracy theory in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Conspiracy theories arise when people believe that something is being hidden that could influence their lives or that of the human race. However, most people do not believe in a “conspiracy theory” because in our culture we believe in freedom of information. We are aware of what is happening around us and, although we very indirectly control what is happening, we have the intelligence and freedom to respond to the event. In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, the World State does not allow this freedom of information and suppresses anything that could make humans more aware of their predetermined lives. Huxley depicts soma, alcohol in blood substitutes, and the suppression of ancient texts in an ironic tone to support the theme of the deterioration of human consciousness in Brave New World. Humans seem obsessed with finding a certain substance to rely on for a better life. In almost every culture on the planet, such substances have been imagined, like the glorious ambrosia of the ancient Greek gods, the forbidden fruit by which Eve was tempted, or, in the World State, the censored soma. Soma "improved" the lives of the World State's inhabitants by allowing them to ignore reality, suppress negative emotions, and amplify positive feelings, but through the consumption of soma, citizens also became censored until they become fully aware of their monotonous life and desperate state. Lenina, a character known for her continued use of soma, visits a reservation where soma is not used. After seeing humans feel "real emotions" that were not under the influence of drugs, she "...felt entitled, after that day of strangeness and horror, to a vacation complete and absolute. " (Huxley, p. 149) The world... middle of paper... or the Savage, she even declares: "Kiss me until I'm in a coma." Kiss me, darling, hugs..." (Huxley, p. 198) She has no idea what a deep monogamous relationship is since she has never read the books. This blinds her to the world outside the World State. We have the power to understand what is happening around us. For the most part, we know what is happening in the world. We can understand other cultures. ours in the World State, people do not have this power. They live their predestined lives without question, which is easy thanks to their consumption of soma, their deposits of alcohol in blood substitutes. the suppression of ancient texts by Huxley who uses an ironic tone throughout the book to effectively emphasize this, thus providing us with an example of a society where conspiracies abound, but people lack the knowledge to observe..
