Essay / Censorship in Fahrenheit 451 - 1103 by John Bradbury
The majority of citizens of Fahrenheit 451 have little or no idea of their true past. This has been demonstrated repeatedly by Bradbury. Even famous figures, some of whom have been extremely influential in shaping our society, have been reduced to figures who only support the government's ideals. For example, “Established in 1790 to burn English-influenced books in the colonies. First firefighter: Benjamin Franklin” (34). Benjamin Franklin went from being an author and writer of many important documents to someone who burned the very things he wrote. Although some of the altered story may have an air of truth to it. The colonists may have burned books at one time, but only to protest British policies and teachings, but they never burned books because they needed a profession for it; especially one that Benjamin Franklin would not support. Even the history of the firefighters has been manipulated. Many citizens did not know the firefighters' past. Because there “was no longer a need for firefighters for the old uses. They have been given a new job, that of guardians of our peace of mind” (58). Many citizens did not know any previous profession of firefighter, and this is just a distorted image in their lives.
