Essay / Montresor's Theme An unreliable narrator in the barrel...
He describes Fortunato as “rich, respected, admired, loved; happy, as I once was. You are a man who will be missed. For me it doesn’t matter” (252). Montresor is insulted that Fortunato seems to view with disdain the fact that he is not a Freemason. And when Fortunato explains that he forgot the Montresor family coat of arms, Montresor insults himself. This explains that Montresor is indeed jealous of Fortunato, which is probably the real reason he kills him. Throughout the story, Montresor does not justify why he committed the murder. He reveals nothing of the “thousand wounds” (250) inflicted on him by Fortunato, nor even the details of the alleged wounds that led him to swear revenge. Montresor's family motto, "nemo me impune lacessit" meaning "no one insults me with impunity" (252), indicates that Montresor only killed Fortunato to protect Montresor's family..
