Considerations in Casino Design“Architecture organizes and structures space for us, and its interiors and the objects that surround and inhabit its rooms can facilitate or inhibit our activities by the way they use that language” (Lawson p. 6). Casinos are tough, competitive markets that strive to outdo each other in terms of promotions, amenities, and overall design. A critical analysis of the considerations taken when designing a casino can be broken down into theoretical strengths of psychology, which include motivational, cognitive, perceptual, and social influences. In this review, I will determine the aspects of design that need to be considered to create a successful operation. “Casinos are often designed to make people feel submissive and to increase their emotional arousal” (Guelph press release). Casinos implement certain elements to provoke these feelings, such as identity checks and security guards, asymmetrical colors and designs, and ambient noise levels. These perceptual influences evoke social status in casino patrons, either by making them feel out of place or not affecting them at all. Casinos also use the strategic location of gaming tables in relation to slot machines and other supporting facilities to create a "maze" quality that encourages a sense of adventure and exploration by guiding patrons all around the installation before even exposing them to anything other than that....
