  • Essay / Brief summary: Saint Mary and the Mother of God

This dogma is the most obvious and the most accepted; The majority of religious sects also believe that Mary is the Mother of God. The greatest evidence of Mary's motherhood is found in the Bible. There are a multitude of direct references to Mary as Mother of God throughout the book. For example, as mentioned previously, in the story of the Annunciation in the Gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel spoke to Mary and told her that she would be the mother of Jesus. In the story of the Visitation, where Elizabeth calls Mary and they both rejoice for their unborn children. Also in the Bible, when Jesus dies on the cross, he calls Mary: “Woman, behold your son” (John 19:27). However, the most direct quote from the Bible itself is found in Acts 1:14. This takes place just after Jesus' death and the apostles are in the upper room "continually praying, with certain women, including Mary, the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.” The Bible proclaims Mary word for word as the mother of God and, being one of the most indisputable books in the world, it fully supports this claim.
