Essay / Ibuprofen - 859
IbuprofenSummaryThe project I chose to research was the effect of ibuprofen on the heart rate of daphnia. The reason I chose to do this is because many people in society use over-the-counter painkillers without really understanding the long-term effects of this medication, other than relieving their pain and swelling. One of the leading medications on the market today is ibuprofen, which you may know as Motrin or Advil. The two drugs are identical except in terms of quantity and price, and even then they might be the same. The organism I chose to work with is a crustacean called Daphnia. Later in this report, I will attempt to explain the importance of this organism and why I chose to perform tests on it. I then, with the information I had, brought up a hypothesis that I would test. Using the available materials, I tested my hypothesis as best I could. While performing the tests, I created graphs and tables of my work. At the end of my experiment, I found an answer that was almost unpredictable with the information I was using. Although it was a rudimentary experiment, I believe I gained a lot from it.IntroductionThe medication I chose, ibuprofen, is an anti-inflammatory pain reliever. It is white, powdery propionic acid, soluble in water and organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. (1) Its structural formula is: (CH3)2CHCH2 CH(CH3)COOHIts role of action as a drug is not entirely clear to science, but this will change over time. One thing we do know is that people who are allergic to aspirin should not take this medication. (2) We now know that it can play a role in inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. (1) Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that are formed in animal tissues from polyunsaturated fatty acids. (3) They affect multiple body systems, including the central nervous, gastrointestinal, urinary, and endocrine systems. It has been shown to have very minor effects on smooth muscle contraction and blood clotting ability that we are concerned about. (4) Excesses of these substances can cause pain, inflammation and fever. It is also an analgesic used to reduce or eliminate pain without causing loss of consciousness. (4) Another name for these substances that we all know is an analgesic. A water flea, or Daphnia, is a member of the subclass Brachiopods, in the order Cladocera. They are found in plankton in open waters. (5) What I was
