Or would the pessimism of just a few individuals take over and stop the success of the entire group? Having successful experiences is a way to create a sense of positive possibilities. However, optimism is much more than the gratification of instant success: “Generally grateful people report being more agreeable and less narcissistic than less grateful people” (Desan 5). An optimistic attitude allows society to persevere in the face of challenges. It is important to process the emotions, not deny them, but then suggest other ways of looking at the situation and what can be done to improve it. In today's society, especially in the community I personally grew up in, I feel like everyone is trying to force individualism through cutthroat competition and enforcement of inferiority or superiority complexes. That being said, I address the idea that the motto of “every man for himself” clearly reigns in today's society; we have lost the will to help others even if we derive no real benefit from it. Once society realizes that coming together to overcome challenges brings ease and security to the community, then we can emerge from the desolate survival of pessimism and thrive in a world of comfort and peace. “Feelings of gratitude are associated with increased feelings of gratitude. feelings of closeness and a desire to build
