Domestic violence occurs at similar rates across all races and cultural groups studied. Research suggests that community violence is a function of poverty, not race. When comparing people at the same income level, there are few differences between races. This finding suggests that the context of poverty, not race, is one of the main risk factors for violence. Most experts believe that children raised in violent homes learn that violence is a way to resolve conflicts and problems. They may replicate the violence they witnessed as children in their future relationships and parenting experiences. Children who witness violence toward their parents are more likely to beat their partners as adults than children raised in nonviolent homes. For some, the transition to adolescence can lead to believing that threats and violence are the norm in their lives.
