The first scientist who lit this spark was Francis Bacon. He designed a logical procedure for gathering information and testing theories. Francis created the scientific method. This new order of steps constituted the basic elements that made new scientific discoveries possible. Several scientists who followed Francis Bacon made achievements in mathematics, science, anatomy, and astronomy. François Viete directed his thoughts towards mathematics and was the first to use letters to represent unknown quantities. He invented trigonometry, a new form of mathematics. However, it was the theories that had the greatest impact. Copernicus was the first man at that time to study astronomy and implement a new idea. The heliocentric theory. At first, people believed in the geocentric theory. To the naked eye, the Earth did not appear to be moving. It looked like the sun, stars, and planets revolved around the earth, making it the center of the universe. The geocentric theory was supported by the Church and the people.
