America is often known as the land of opportunity, a place where you can be free. Many immigrants came to America to have a greater chance of succeeding in life. Immigrants took a leap of faith by coming to America. For some it worked well, but for others they had a difficult time here. Despite the difficulties faced by immigrants, such as: Standing out from others, being separated from their families, and breaking their culture, immigrants are still grateful to be in America because they were in better conditions than in their home country. When you watch interviews or watch an immigrant's perspective you get a lot of answers about being in America, some important things that stand out are how much freedom the immigrant had and their age. These two things had a huge impact on immigrants' views of America. For some people, fitting in is a natural thing, but for others, it was a different story. Immigrants often had difficulty blending in among Americans because of their clothing, the way they spoke, and their approach to people. As you read about the experiences of children of immigrants, you will discover that some integrate well because of their independence, while others do not integrate because they follow their parents' wishes. In the book Living In Two Worlds, it appears that for Aisha it was natural to integrate with Americans, it was as if she were a born teenager. She “was dressed like any American girl her age: large gold earrings, baggy jeans, and an oversized sweatshirt” (Kosof 19-20). By looking at situations from the immigrants' perspective and how they express things the way they do, you will be able to see that they are more than grateful for the opportunities given to them.
