    Well-being can be defined as health, happiness and good fortune; well-being; Prosperity; and Financial or other assistance provided, including by government, to those in need (Merriam-Webster, 2014). This can be very beneficial for people who need it. Tim Prenzler stated that “welfare systems are often seen as providing a “safety net” that prevents citizens from falling below a minimum standard of living (2012, p2). Anyone can use it if they need it. People managed to use social assistance to get out of their slums and began to support themselves. Others decided not to try to get out of this slum and live on this social assistance. They decided they didn't need to try and let the government support them. Social assistance is a good tool to help people get back on their feet, but it should not provide them with a stable income. Welfare is the use of material and physical assistance by the government for its citizens in need. These include unemployment compensation, food stamps, retirement benefits and various social services ranging from drug treatment to child care assistance. Additionally, before public welfare provided by the government, there was private welfare provided by private organizations, such as churches and groups of individuals willing to help those less fortunate. Some of these institutions still remain today and provide people with food, shelter and clothing. It was in these places that ideas of public welfare were born and quickly made their way to the people capable of making these decisions. Unemployment compensation is awarded when a person is unemployed and cannot pay for necessities. This payment is intended to be used to buy clothes, food, pay bills, etc. Other commonly used types of social protection are retirement benefits. Retirement benefits are paid to people who have reached age 65 and have accumulated money in taxes over their lifetime. Different benefits for retirees include Child support is another type of social protection used in the system. Child support is used when a family is below the poverty line and has children who need support to attend school, be fed, clothed and sheltered. Other types of social assistance include those that benefit people with disabilities, whether intellectually or physically..
