  • Essay / Shame By Sandra Cisneros Analysis - 858

The two essays discussed in this article are “My Name” and “Shame”. Sandra Cisneros in 'My Name' presents a very strong point of view on how her name has a different meaning and reminds her of her grandmother with whom she shares her name and also regrets the fact that it is somehow connected to the weakness that she and her grandmother used to think that they were supposed to behave a certain way because they were Mexican and had no power or freedom. This name was a kind of reminder that they should be gentle and polite and calm because no meaning of the name represents something powerful, expressive and strong. Esperanza in English means hope while in Spanish it meant sadness and expectation and it inflicted on the nations of women's society. Richard Gregory in "Shame" described incidents from his childhood where he was repeatedly made ashamed by his ethnicity or the fact that he did not have a father. He describes his childhood where he was humiliated in front of the whole class by his teacher and where he also loved Helene. The teacher pointed out that he lived on relief money raised by the class and had no father, which left him scarred in his memory as a shameful event. He couldn't forget how close he was and everyone felt sorry for him, it was something that made him feel weak and guilty for no reason. Both essays very strongly portray the protagonists and reveal some of their weaknesses, which has notions related to the perception of the people and society. Both essays have the similarity that they discuss the weaknesses of the protagonists' lives. They describe the social stigmas and fear of being objected to or feeling guilty about the medium that affected him growing up as a writer while Richard had to struggle with his past. and he did a lot of work against discrimination against blacks and in other areas like athletics. Both essays were autobiographical stories of the authors and discussed the inner, deep issues that shaped them to become good people and their lives that developed their ideas. name, identity and social perception. Both have a strong and effective image of thoughts and the use of words gave strength to the texts. Both stories, although very different from each other, had a similarity in image of society which led to the pressure and psychological effect on them and being the winners in the end.
