I was watching “Sister Wives” on TV when I realized what polygamy really meant. The TV show is about Kody Brown and he has four wives and 16 children in total. “What is polygamy? » You asked. It is a marriage that includes more than two partners and sometimes even more. When a man is married to one or more women, it is called polygyny, and when a woman is married to more than one man, it is called polyandry. If you don't know what polygamy is, does it mean "many wives"? Polyandry means marriage. Can you imagine having to share your own husband or boyfriend? Lifestyles are no longer what they used to be. Today, most Americans have only one spouse. (Sister Wives) There are so many misunderstandings about polygamy, but I am here to set the record straight and tell you the true meaning and history of polygamy. Polygamy has been widely practiced throughout history, although Mormons no longer practice it today. Polygamy is still known to be practiced in some small areas of Africa, Asia, and small areas of North and South America. The reason Mormons practiced polygamy in the first place was to “multiply” and spread the religion. Only with God's approval and blessing would men become polygamous. The reason is that a fertile woman can only give birth once a year. Women would be constantly procreating for 30 years. Only if the man is fertile and can impregnate a woman at any time or when they have sex at ANY age. By allowing a man to have multiple wives or partners, he can have more children in a year than by having only one per year, and hundreds of children over the course of his life. If a man has only had one partner or wife during 30 years of marriage, he can have around 30 children.
