It is the story of how one character, Yunior, loses the love of his life due to his own infidelity. The book also explains in detail how men learn to think that women are not fully human and the very difficult process by which they learn the truth. In general, Yunior struggles with being a son, brother, lover, and more throughout the novel. We see Yunior grow as a person and blossom into adulthood. While the book provides a holistic view of his life and the lives of those around him, we can piece together a chronological understanding of his childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. We also get to see insight into the people around him as well as his life experiences and growth. The entire book is a collection of several unrelated stories told by the same narrator, Yunior. Yunior appears as a reckless Dominican who is incapable of loving others with all his heart. Throughout the book, Yunior's stories depict love, betrayal, and violence compressed and written in a textured tone while expressing difficult emotions mixed with cultural displacement and rejection from his adopted country. The novel begins with the most unique statement: “I'm not a bad guy. I know how defensive and unscrupulous that sounds, but it's true. I'm like everyone else: weak, full of mistakes, but fundamentally good. » (Junot Diaz, This is how we lose it, page 3). The simple morality expressed by Yunior in this quote is a comparison to the theme of the rest of the book, which is found in the middle of the paper...the half-life of love is eternal. (Junot Diaz, This is how you lose it, page 18). Yunior's character evolves throughout the novel and we see him go from a boy to a man. His character development ties into the book's actual titles in various ways. We see him struggle with the relationships he has in the stories, including with his mother. His stepmother played a major role in his life, and many could argue that the relationship he didn't have with his real mother could be the reason for all his failed relationships with women and the way he considered. The relationship he had with his father could also have played a major role. Although his father tried his best to be a great father, he wasn't there too emotionally and using money was a way to compensate by buying him numerous amounts of gifts, clothes and various other things..
