The History of Air NorthWhen examining the major impact of an airline, one must consider its history. Air North – Yukon's airline has been around for 36 years, dating back to the 1970s. Air North is a regional carrier that provides service to the Yukon (the westernmost and smallest of Canada's three federal territories) between the Yukon and the British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Alaska (Fly Air North, 2013). These services also include scheduled passenger services, charter services for passengers and/or cargo, and cargo and ground handling services (Fly Air North, 2013). The charter passenger transportation service is offered throughout Canada and the United States. Yukon Airlines is headquartered in Whitehorse, Yukon. It is the largest airline in the Yukon and one of five Canadian carriers to offer scheduled, year-round domestic air service using jet equipment (Fly Air North, 2013). The airline also has over two hundred full and part-time employees in the Yukon and also operates a base in Vancouver, which employs over sixty people. Air North is one of the largest private sector employers in Yukon (Fly Air North, 2013). Interestingly, one in fifteen Yukoners has an ownership or employment stake in Air North, Yukon's airline (Fly Air North, 2013). Joseph Sparling (current owner) and Thomas Wood founded the airline on February 1, 1977 (Fly Air North, 2013). North, 2013). Surprisingly, Air North first operated a charter service primarily to support the mining industry (Fly Air North, 2013). Initially, Air North began operations with a Cessna 206, then slowly increased its aircraft to the Cessna 150, 172, 185, 206 and 237, the Dehavilland Beaver, Otter and Ca...... middle of paper ... ..passengers (Fly Air North. 2013). The airline also has a Boeing 737-400, which can accommodate up to 156 passengers. The fleet also includes two Boeing 737-200s with a capacity of 120 seats and five Hawker Siddeley 748s with a capacity of 4 to 40 passengers depending on cargo configuration (Fly Air North, 2013).
