  • Essay / Solution Focused Counseling Interventions - 806

I have been very fortunate since the beginning of my counseling journey to have a mentor. Through this mentor relationship, I feel like I have the benefit of finding a consulting perspective that is definitely a better fit for me. This model of counseling is solution-focused therapy, which is a pragmatic approach focused on solving or managing problems through the most effective route. Brief counseling does not embrace the notion of “healing” and does not aim for character change (Burwell & Chen, 2006, p. 191). The article I found in Counseling Psychology Quarterly takes the fundamental aspects of the solution-focused counseling model and equates them to their effectiveness in career treatment. The article's authors, Burwell and Chen, posit that career counseling aims to help clients become more effective agents in solving problems related to their professional aspects of life. To achieve this goal, theorists and practitioners are called upon to develop useful helping approaches that can help clients more effectively and efficiently. Therefore, by adopting the principles and techniques of solution-focused therapy in career counseling practice, career counseling interventions can be very effective (2006, p. 189). Burwell and Chen's research applies each major aspect of solution-focused counseling to the principles of professional interventions. . The first aspect is to focus on positive change. The SFT model states that one should focus on positive change rather than the cause of the client's problem. In a career counseling context, the focus should be on the future and helping the client find alternatives and assets that will benefit their career exploration. The second aspect of SFT, which...... middle of paper... ...is philosophically and clinically consistent with career counselors as a modality aimed at promoting career enrichment and professional well-being . Although the present reflection on bridging the two modes of career guidance is an inductive attempt, it has presented some interesting thoughts in the search for more effective and efficient career guidance approaches (2006, p. 2003) . As well as specific solution-focused counseling techniques, such as the use of: compliments, goal-oriented futures, perspective scaling, and normalizing and reconstructing statements only promote the career guidance process by providing the client with a real and tangible forum to help them and improve their lives.
