These lyrics from Sting's classic song "Every Breath You Take" describe both Big Brother's actions in the 1984 novel and today's media. BigBrother, like the current government, monitors society's every move. The government controls the media and according to ABC's Peter Jennings, "whoever controls the media controls reality." The media, and especially the government, for Jennings, control what we think, what we know, and what we want. In George Orwell's 1984 novel, society is controlled by a divine being, Big Brother. “Middle class” citizens are constantly monitored and monitored via a TV screen to ensure that they do not rebel against Big Brother or even think against him. The telescreen also displays edited news and history. They control everything everyone sees and does. They control people's reality.
