  • Essay / The theme of alienation, anxiety and depression

Alienation, anxiety, panic and depression are all common to humans, and yet they are often misunderstood, misrelated and little sympathized. Referencing Hemmingway's short story one last time, it is clear that the characters could easily be the same man at different stages of life and different stages of anxiety about life. A young, healthy and confident waiter with a family life waiting for him at home. Next, an older waiter, who has nothing waiting for him at home and suffers from alienation and anxiety. Finally, an old man whose alienation turned into panic and depression, and thus suicide. This gradual decline is common in our society, and often young, healthy characters represent our hopes and dreams, while older characters convey lost hope, the despair of loneliness, and the inevitable aging.
