This article will discuss the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or known as second-hand smoke (SHM) among children. Additionally, it will focus on how ETS is becoming a problem for children in American homes as well as other well-developed countries. It will describe the effects of second-hand smoke on children living in a contaminated environment. One health effect can be asthma, caused by parents smoking nearby. Additionally, there will be a discussion that as a public health practitioner he is trying to improve the health of these children and educate their parents to reduce their cigarette smoking around children. First, I would like to define environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, it describes that ETS consists of the burning end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe and someone else inhaling the smoke, also known as second-hand smoke (SHS). (US EPA, 2011) In addition, the smoke of these cigars is composed of approximately 4,000 substances which, over time, have been detected by scientists that, when inhaling them, cause cancer. (US EPA, 2011) also, ETS is classified as a class I carcinogen by the Internal Agency for Cancer Research (Cobanoglu et al., 2007). Having the definition of environmental tobacco smoke, let's apply the terminology to children. If an adult person is at high risk of developing cancer or any type of respiratory disease. Are children at higher risk of developing respiratory illness? Children face a very high percentage of respiratory illnesses such as asthma when living near a smoker. One of the reasons children develop this problem is from their parents.
