They tricked Claudio into marrying Hero because they faked his death after he was disgraced at the altar. After discovering that she had been wrongly accused, Claudio apologized to Leonato and told him that he wanted to make it up to him. Then Leonato said: “Since you cannot be my son-in-law, still be my nephew. » (5.1.300-301) In this quote, they make Claudio believe that he is going to marry Hero's cousin. What they are actually doing is tricking him into marrying Hero. So as the marriage begins and after Claudio agrees to marry her, the hero unmasks himself and Claudio realizes that she is not dead and marries.
