  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Education - 1559

For centuries, generation after generation, people have learned the same way by learning mathematics and it seems that we have removed the logic from mathematics and are using our imagination more to fill in the blanks. The only truly universal language is not English, but mathematics. So why do we in the United States want to teach children differently? The highest ranked country in mathematics and science is Shanghai, China (Weisenthal, 2013). A country four times the size of the United States, doing much better with fewer resources. This is a flaw in our education system because senators, government officials, and corporations think that all students in the United States can learn the same way, but they are wrong. There is a famous saying across the United States that goes, “If it ain't broke, don't fix it.” Bert Lance popularized the phrase and explained, “That's the problem with government: fixing things that aren't broken and not fixing things that are broken” (Perlow, 2014). Many experts have suggested that the American education system does not need a new type of curriculum, but rather to emulate East Asian countries like South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, which continue to outperform others (Lepi, 2013). This is just one solution among many to help the education system develop and it is truly beneficial for our society.
