    Nutrition is a process that involves the breakdown of food and other substances in the mouth useful in providing body energy. Eating a healthy diet can help avoid known and unknown health problems. Poor diet is harmful to health and causes diseases such as kwashiorkor, scurvy, obesity and metabolic syndromes. Popkin (2011) stated: “Over the past 20 to 30 years, the world has reduced water consumption, shifted toward sugary drinks, increased the proportion of sugary and ultra-processed foods, and reduces its consumption of many healthy components of the diet. our diet, including legumes, fruits and vegetables” (p. 83). Different types of foods contain various nutrients which range from fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and water. Insufficient, unbalanced or excessive consumption of nutrients by an organism results in malnutrition. Today, the trend in food and nutrition is changing at a staggering pace. Good food choices positively affect an individual's health, while poor diet has negative long-term effects. A healthy diet gives the body enough nutrients to function physically, fight disease and. maintain well-being. Most foods, especially on the market today, contain lots of saturated fats, lots of carbohydrates, partially hydrogenated oils, and highly processed foods. Popkin (2011) stated that being overweight carries serious risks, such as increased risk of heart disease, high. blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis (p. 84). While it's important to achieve a weight that's appropriate for your height and body type, losing weight can significantly improve your health. To improve their overall well-being, they should avoid boredom, frustration, stress and sedentary lifestyles by increasing activity levels. Taking simple things like walking instead of driving or using stairs instead of elevators can increase weight loss and overall well-being.
