  • Essay / Slut Shaming - 1056

According to Urban Dictionary, the most popular definition of the word slut is "a woman with the morals of a man." It is a derogatory word used by classmates, journalists, and even politicians to objectify and ridicule women who do not fit the status quo of how a traditional feminine woman should act. Slut-shaming is an unfortunate phenomenon in our society in which many women are constantly criticized and degraded for their promiscuity or sexuality. While many people defend their opinions by claiming that sluts have no self-respect and lack good morals, this is clearly ignorant and should not be tolerated. In fact, slut-shaming is a dangerous problem because it contributes to a double standard against women, is a form of bullying that leads to horrible consequences, and plays a huge role in culture of rape by blaming the victim. the misogynistic mentality that women who behave like "sluts" simply lack positive guidance and that this new mainstream shame could help prevent naive girls from making bad decisions. George Tyndale of The Sunday Mercury defends his position, saying: "Peer pressure is the one thing many young girls react to, and if other teenage girls are the only thing that makes them think twice about their appearance and their behavior, so be it. » (Tyndale). Many others agree with him, blame other girls for their "badness" and are disgusted by the worrying oversexualization in today's media. They justify their rude comments by believing that they are helping them; that their slander is actually sound advice that should be followed (Tyndale). Instead, they contribute to a society that dehumanizes women and makes us... middle of paper... feel shameful. Reference center for viewpoints. The Sydney Morning Herald. January 26, 2013. the web.
