  • Essay / The Theory of Fundamental Causes: Analysis - 1241

In the film we watched in class The Medicated Child, we saw several children who had been diagnosed with various psychiatric illnesses and who were subjected to various medications, often a large number of different ones, which affect their brain, their mood and many other things. One of the doctors in the film even admitted that it was a guessing game. In my opinion, until your brain has finished developing, you should not try to change it. The only reason children had access to a psychiatrist and could be put on all the medications was because their parents, or their parents' insurance, could pay for them. As we learned in Busfield's article, pharmaceutical companies are out to make money if they couldn't afford the doctors or the pills. I personally think that at least two thirds of these children would have been better off.
