  • Essay / Choosing the Career Path That's Right for You - 725

Ever since civilization has been able to record history, we have been able to identify the type of employment fields that have existed throughout history. Little has changed over the centuries; Ancient Greece was made up of farmers and fishermen, just like we have today. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ was a carpenter by trade, he followed in the footsteps of his adoptive father. I believe that many people throughout history have sought to follow the same profession as their parents, because they respected their mother/father; parents have a great influence on our career choices. Unfortunately, many people have come to realize that they earned their degrees/licenses in their chosen field of work without any meaningful purpose other than satisfying the wishes of others. I believe that some of us make our career choices disastrous because we lack a calling. In the booklet “Let Your Life Speak,” Parker J. Palmer (2000) explained to the PendleHill community his despair over the teaching of sociology at Georgetown. Palmer didn't think the career path he chose was meant for him; Palmer said, "Despite the American myth, I cannot be or do what I desire...There are certain roles and relationships in which we thrive and others in which we wither and die." » (p.44)I believe that an individual's career path is one of the most important choices an individual will make during their lifetime. The career paths we follow affect the world. For example, if Albert Einstein had not become a theoretical physicist, the theory of general relativity might not exist today; if Einstein had not warned President Franklin D. Roosevelt about the potential development of bombs by other countries, the Manhattan Project may not have happened - the project acted as a chain reaction toward... ... middle of paper... ...the madness of our career meets the great need of the world for our work, it is the meeting point of purpose in our lives. Unfortunately, there is no guide on how to live a life of purpose and make meaningful choices. However, I believe that an individual's religious beliefs and family support can help make their journey easier. We don't all find our calling, some of us look at our destiny and turn away from it, for fear of change. Others never have the opportunity to find their calling because of bad influences in their lives. I believe the place God calls us to is our calling. If an individual is courageous and puts his ego aside, he may be able to listen to God's instructions; fortunately, I followed such instructions, and that is the reason why I am currently enrolled in a prestigious university to obtain my degree - to achieve my calling!
