  • Essay / Health care varies across economic differences - 1848

Today in the United States of America, the race and culture in which a person grew up determines the quality of health care they will receive throughout his life. Minority patients tend to receive lower quality health care compared to patients of the same race as their doctor. Minorities report less satisfaction with doctor visits (Schnittker and Liang 811). This action endangers the health of minority patients and can cause many long-term consequences for them. Physicians should strive to improve their relationships with minority patients by learning to communicate verbally and nonverbally with them, learning about how different cultures present with symptoms of illness, and providing minorities with the right to health insurance. physicians to maintain a strong relationship with minority patients. “One in three U.S. residents identify as African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, or multiracial. By 2050, the number of minorities is expected to be one in two” (Eliminating Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health Care: What Are the Options? 2008). The rate of minorities is increasing rapidly across America; therefore, white physicians are exposed to more minorities than in the past. Since minorities will make up most of the United States in the coming decades, doctors must learn how to provide these groups with the best possible health care. Most doctors are accustomed to treating patients of their own race. They must therefore learn to treat patients different from themselves, because the rate of these groups is increasing. Since so many minority patients are unhappy...... middle of paper ...... learn about different cultures and entitle minorities to health insurance. Even if doctors see no problem in their poor relationships with minority patients since they are a minority in the overall population, they need to be prepared when minorities take over most of the United States. If minorities continue to receive the same quality of health care as they do today, the United States will be filled with unhealthy people who will have no trust in their doctors. The United States has many other issues that need to be focused on, and healthcare can be solved if doctors and the healthcare industry would take the time to work on their relationships with minority patients. It is time for doctors to stand up and change their relationship with minority patients so that America's health can be saved and become a healthy environment for all..
