In the early American colonies, the South and the North developed into two separate colonies. Although both of their origins were European, their customs and lifestyles became so different that they played a major role in American history. There are many reasons for these differences, but only a few major reasons stand out. Religion, greed, and the composition of the colonies are some of the main reasons why the North and South became so different in the late 1600s. The different religions in specific colonies varied, but the people of the region New Englanders were generally more devoted to their religious beliefs, while southerners felt that religion was not as important. Northern children learn the Bible as soon as possible, which instills high moral values in people. In the south, only the wealthiest families could afford education, making the common population ignorant and uneducated. New Englanders were willing to work together and help each other for the good of the community because they felt they were working according to God's will. (Doc. A) The South, on the other hand, worked to improve itself through the Headright system, which ended up pitting people against each other instead of working with each other.
