Essay / Comparing Chris McCandless, Jon Krakauer and Everett Ruess
Many people decide to live their lives alone; however, only a few choose to live in the wild. In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer vividly describes the adventurous journey that Chris McCandless took. From the friends he made to the trials he went through, McCandless is portrayed as a friendly and outgoing person despite the fact that he was a drifter. Besides McCandless, there are even more people who have taken the risk of living in nature, like Jon Krakauer and Everett Ruess. All three had both similarities and differences between their own qualities as a person and their journey. The three adventurers showed their affection for the wilderness through the way they lived after leaving society. After reaching Fairbanks, Alaska, McCandless set up camp and began living off the nearby wildlife. In his journal, he wrote down what he caught each day and showed his gratitude through his font. He believed that “it [wildlife] was morally indefensible to waste any part of a slaughtered animal for food” (166). He did his best to preserve the animals he slaughtered for food, which reflected his thoughts about nature as something precious. Krakauer also loved what nature had in store for his desire for intriguing natural events. In his youth, he “devoted most of [his] waking hours to fantasizing about, and then undertaking, climbs of isolated mountains in Alaska and Canada” (134). As shown by the time he spent dreaming, people can infer that he is a person who deeply admires nature. At the age of eighteen, Ruess dreamed of living in nature for simple pleasure. He wandered in search of events that might surprise him until his imminent death, in which he decided to find the most ...... middle of paper ......t of his time, browsing long distances with little parental guidance until his disappearance. These three men have their own attributes that are both similar and different from each other. Ranging from childhood to thoughts on society to details of their journey, they each possessed a large amount of comparable attributes. Nature can be described as something magnificent and delicious. It's all in the eye of the beholder and they saw it exactly the same way. All three of them have most likely achieved their goal in life: to live in the beauty of nature. Works Cited Krakauer, Jon.
