A study conducted on a series of 515 patients. These patients were 3 months or older but younger than 13 years. They were being treated for serious bacterial infections. These patients received 10 to 20 mg/kg of meropenem every 8 hours. The most commonly observed findings were diarrhea, rash, nausea, and vomiting. Another study of 321 pediatric patients aged 3 months to 17 years with meningitis received 40 mg/kg of meropenem every 8 hours. These resulting side effects include diarrhea, rash, oral monilasis, and flossing. Regarding adult patients, the test included 2904 immunocompetent patients. These patients received 500 mg to 1,000 mg of meropenem every 8 hours. There were 5 deaths, 36 patients had to stop treatment due to adverse events, and many patients were seriously ill and had other background illnesses (1). Some of the major adverse reactions include injection site inflammation, injection site reaction, phlebitis/thrombophlebitis, injection site pain, and injection site edema. Other common side effects were diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, other gastrointestinal events, anorexia, flatulence, ileus, dyspepsia, and gastrointestinal obstruction.
