Essay / Hannibal Lecter: Character diagnosis and treatment of...
I. IntroductionIn the TV show Hannibal, a basic storyline forms between Will Gram, the protagonist, and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the antagonist. Hannibal Lecture is a well-established psychiatrist who also happens to be a cannibalistic serial killer. In the series, Dr. Lecter is Will Graham's psychiatrist and helps Graham separate the serial cases from his own reality. However, Graham is unaware of Dr. Lecter's additional circulars, in particular he is the serial killer Graham is looking for but ignores. Due to his psychotic nature in addition to his deceitful but cold behavior, I would diagnose him with antisocial personality disorder.II. Character Background and DiagnosisThe character I have chosen to analyze is Hannibal Lecter. Based on various manifestations of his behavior, I would diagnose him with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). Although ASPD seems explicit, ASPD actually has more to do with disregard for the rights of others than with being antisocial (Rosenburg & Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). For example, a person with ASD may threaten harm to others or themselves (Rosenburg & Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). In the DSM-IV-TR, at least three of the seven specific criteria for ASD must be displayed from age. of 15. A particular criterion concerns the failure to comply with societal norms in accordance with the law (Rosenburg and Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). Although Lecter adheres to societal norms such as poise and respect when in public, he disregards the law by repeatedly committing murder. Another criterion involved deception, lying, and fraud for personal gain (Rosenburg and Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). Hannibal Lecter increased this criterion tenfold. It works which seems to be appropriate middle of paper...... in conclusion I think Hannibal Lecter's diagnosis would be antisocial personality disorder with a tendency to be more on the psychopathy side. disorder. It presented six of the seven DSM criteria that identify someone with ASPD. Additionally, his behaviors fit well with psychopathy, which is a narrower view of ASPD. As mentioned previously, this can cause problems when seeking to treat the disorder. It has therefore been claimed that there is no clear treatment. Because of this lack of treatment, I hypothesized that his future would end in isolation or death. However, Hannibal Lecter is good at giving advice to his friends and patients, even if that advice was superficial. Additionally, he is an excellent cook and was also very polite. Overall, he is very intelligent in many areas other than psychology, but his ASPD, serial killings, and cannibalism will be the end of him..
