Text to Self: In Grendel, Grendel has a strong hatred for the human race. This hatred stems from the abuse Grendel received from people simply for being himself, a putrid but innocent monster. Everyone has experienced the cruel judgment of others, and I am certainly no exception. School, being the social competition that it is, not only blurs the lines between who we are and what others think we are, but also interferes with our perception of ourselves. Take me for example. I know that I am an intelligent, calm and kind person with a bright personality, although during my presentation I am often perceived as introverted and cowardly. Because of these assumptions, I must remember that I do not need to prove myself, as those who are meant to discover the self beneath will do. However, this is often easier said than done, which frustrates me. As with Grendel, the world's opinion of me not only causes me to struggle with myself, but with them as well.
