Orsino's speech is the first notable sign of his excessive indulgence in love. His speech is full of melodramatic words. Duke Orsino presents himself as a selfish and self-loving man, obsessed with love. He constantly moans that he is lovesick and wishes that "if music be the food of love" (Ii1), he could kill his unrequited love with an excess of music. He interprets music as his emotions and believes that an excess of love can overcome his depressions. Orsino states that Olivia had cleared the air around her the first time he saw her. He explains to Curio when he first met her: "Oh, when my eyes first saw Olivia, I thought she had purged the air of the plague" (Ii20-21) . This shows Orsino's immediate infatuation with Olivia before he even speaks to her. From the moment he laid eyes on Olivia, Orsino became a victim of love. Since then, his desire for Olivia has pursued him. This demonstrates Orsino's very superficial love for Olivia, even though he claims to be truly in love with Olivia.
