I believe that you learn leadership by setting an example. You must be willing to do the things you ask others to do by getting down on your hands and knees, if necessary, and getting your hands dirty. This burns an image in an employee or subordinate's mind of the type of manager you are. In this article, I will cover the role a manager plays in an organization by describing four management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. I will then describe three traits: conceptual, human and technical, that an individual must possess to become a successful manager within an organization and how they fit into the four functions. There are generally three levels of management within an organization: first level, middle management, and senior management. Front-line managers are usually called supervisors. They have a duty to supervise employees in non-managerial positions who perform certain work to produce merchandise for the organization. All departments in the organization will have a front-line manager (Jones and George, 2011). Middle managers supervise front-line management teams and seek methods to organize human and additional resources to achieve the organization's goals. The middle manager will have marketing or production knowledge and will help their supervisors use their operating budget more efficiently and reduce manufacturing costs. If organizational goals are not achieved, middle managers will make suggestions to senior managers on how to achieve the goals (Jones and George, 2011). Senior managers are responsible for the operation of each division.
