  • Essay / Leadership Reflection Retreat - 1492

On Saturday, February 27, 2016, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., I had the opportunity to observe the African Diaspora Reading Group (ADRG) leadership meeting . The purpose of the leaders meeting was to plan the upcoming event “Complex Conversations” and check how the leaders were going so far. Every year, ADRG hosts a large-scale event discussing topics related to the African diaspora. Typically, each semester we have a leadership retreat, a day to come together and plan for the upcoming semester, including the big event. However, this semester we were unable to hold a retreat. Saturday was the closest meeting to a leadership retreat. Leading up to the event, we had several unsuccessful phone meetings and brief meetings before our weekly town hall meetings. Most leaders felt overwhelmed by college and post-college stressors, making it difficult to focus on the event. However, overall the meeting was a success. Background of ADRG, its leaders and members ADRG is a reading group of the Department of English. Dr. Mary Helen Washington and I founded the reading group in the fall of 2014. I have served as president since the beginning of the organization. Our When the facilitators arrived, I had prepared the True Colors activity for them due to time constraints. Since leaders are usually late for meetings, I normally try to plan around how late they are. Lateness has become an unnecessary culture at ADRG. Looking back, I think it came from me. Sometimes I'm not the most punctual person. As we continued our exercise, I was very interested to see how our colors matched. Our leaders were all blue and green and only the leader was orange. After administering the test, I stood back and allowed the other leaders to follow the schedule I had established with the things we needed to accomplish that day and began my work.
